Portugal Training Camp
14 April, 2012
Fifteen ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes gave their preparations for the summer season a boost at an Aviva funded training camp in Vilamoura, Portugal, from 31 March to 13 April. Athletes who benefited from the camp were Suzi Boast, Charlotte Browning, Rowena Cole, Lucy Dowsett, Faye Fullerton, Phil Hurst, Gemma Kersey, Leigh Lennon, Alison Leonard, Mark Mitchell, Emma Pallant, Sam Petty, Zac Randall, Adelle Tracey, Jen Walsh.
As well as taking part in a variety of different training sessions, including track and grass sessions, tempo runs, drills, circuits and core stability work, the athletes benefited from the expertise of OCWK sports psychologist Dr Anna Waters. Anna led workshops on fine tuning the psychological side of warm up and how to maximise recovery after training and racing from a psychological perspective and introduced the athletes to a technique called Mindfulness, a type of meditation that focuses on being in the moment which can help with competition nerves and anxiety leading into races. The athletes’ recovery from training was assisted by OCWK massage therapists Lesley Bryant and Sarah Whitlock.
The athletes also benefited from the presence of mentor Dame Kelly Holmes for three days of camp, who led training sessions and passed on her advice and expertise to the athletes in one-to-one and group sessions.
