Non Stanford wins World U23 Triathlon Title
21 October, 2012
‘On Camp with Kelly’ member Non Stanford put in a stunning performance on Saturday 20 October to win the World Under 23 title at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Auckland, New Zealand.
Non’s GB team mate Lucy Hall led out the swim and Non worked hard after the exiting the water to ride up to the lead group and she took control of the race from there. She was frequently in the lead on the bike and immediately took up the lead with Sarissa De Vries from The Netherlands on the run. The pair ran together for 9km before Stanford pushed the pace and claimed the world title in 2:13.06, eight seconds ahead of De Vries. Non completed the 1500m swim in 19:54, 40km bike in 1:15:42 and 10km run in 35:41.
Non said: “It was a quality field out there with really strong runners. I struggled on the first few laps of the bike but I managed to ride up to the lead group. I got on the run and kept my head down and eventually broke free. It was the dream scenario, but never has one of my race plans gone to plan! For it to actually go right for once is absolutely unbelievable. It happened on the right day!”
Non added the World Under 23 title to the Mixed Team World title she won in August.
She added: “It has been such a long year and the last few weeks have been really hard. I had some really tough times, especially after the race in Yokohama when I was ill. It has been an amazing year. If you’d said a year ago that I’d have got on the World podium twice I would never have believed you. I can’t thank the team up in Leeds enough and the British Triathlon and Welsh Triathlon and obviously my mum and dad and everybody. Everyone contributes and without them I wouldn’t be here today.”
On Sunday 6 October Jess Coulson (Stockport Harriers) won the BUPA Great Edinburgh 10K in a new personal best of 33:12, 13 seconds ahead of GB Olympic marathon representative Freya Murray.
