Jess Coulson Wins In Liverpool
25 November, 2012
Jess Coulson (Stockport Harriers) secured her selection for the European Cross Country Championships in Budapest on 9 December with a brilliant win in the senior women’s race at the McCain Liverpool Cross Challenge in a muddy Sefton Park on Saturday 24 November.
Jess led for much of the 8.1km race and pulled away to win in 27:41 by seven seconds from Hannah Walker. After the race she said:
“I wanted to sit in and play it safe to ensure I made the top six Under 23s. I knew it would be tense so when I took the lead I tried to test Hannah a bit and I felt quite comfortable. I’ve run well on the road but not always so well in the mud so I’m, really happy. It’s all thanks to my coach Mick Woods who has set all my training and really motivated me, and so have my family. Once I took the lead I didn’t look back once; I just went for it and now I’m looking forward to the European Cross.”
Emma Pallant (Aldershot, Farnham & District) was also to the fore for much of the race but was forced to drop out with an ankle problem. Having suffered from a stomach bug during the week Gemma Kersey (Basildon AC) was disappointed with her 37th place finish in 30:21.
Jen Walsh (Spenborough & District AC) finished a close second in the Under 20 women’s race to secure her selection for the European Cross, chasing winner Emelia Gorecka all the way to the line and finishing in the same time of 15:18 on the line.
Jen said: “I obviously came here hoping to make the team but to finish so close to Emelia is brilliant and gives me so much confidence.”
Simon Horsfield (East Cheshire & Tameside) put in a good performance in senior men’s 9.8km race, finishing 16th overall and third Under 23 in 30:45 to secure his place in the team for Budapest.
