9 December, 2012
‘On Camp with Kelly’ athlete Jess Coulson (Stockport Harriers) performed brilliantly to win the Under 23 women’s title at the Spar European Cross Country Championships in Budapest, Hungary, on Sunday 9 December. It was the second consecutive year the race had been won by an OCWK athlete, with Emma Pallant taking the title last year.
It was a dominant performance by Jess who won the 6km race by over 50 metres in 20:40. She was to the fore from the start of the race and made her decisive move shortly before the 4km point, quickly building a big lead on the field.
After the race she said: “This has been a long time coming. The last time I made a GB team was five years ago. I put it down to my coach, Mick Woods. I just really worked hard and I enjoyed it out there today, I was even singing to myself on the way around. I just felt good. I got going and then didn’t stop.”
The Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team took silver medals six points behind Russia.
Jen Walsh (Spenborough & District AC) finished eighth in the junior women’s 4km race in 14:01, having been to the fore for much of the race, helping Aviva GB & NI to the team title by a massive 78 points ahed of Germany.
Emelia Gorecka (Aldershot Farnham & District), who has previously taken part in ‘Future Stars with Kelly’ Education Days, won the silver medal with in 13:37 behind winner Amela Terzic of Serbia’s 13:29.
Simon Horsfield finished 23rd in the Under 23 men’s 8km race in 25:21 and took a team bronze medal.
With two gold, three silver and five bronze medals the Aviva GB & NI Team topped the medal table for the fifth successive year at the event.
