Aviva London Grand Prix
14 July, 2012
No less than half of the ten athletes who lined up in the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ 800m at the Aviva London Grand Prix on Saturday 14 July set new personal bests, with the win going to Rowena Cole (Coventry Godiva Harriers) in 2:04.01.
Rowena went straight to the front followed by Tara Bird (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) and Philippa Aukett (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers), behind pacemaker Shelayna Oskan-Clarke (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) who went through the bell in 61.37 seconds, with 16-year-old Loren Bleaken also to the fore in the early stages.
With 150 metres to go Tara moved onto Rowena’s shoulder and looked ready to take the lead. But Rowena pushed on and they battled it out coming into the home straight cheered on by a packed crowd. As they approached the line Claire Tarplee (Solihull & Small Heath) came through on the inside and Philippa was also finishing strongly, the three athletes crossing the line almost together with Rowena taking the win in 2:04.01, Claire second in 2:04.08 and Philippa third in 2:04.11, both the latter two in personal bests.
Tara held on for fourth in 2:04.50 ahead of Adelle Tracey (Guildford & Godalming) who clocked a personal best of 2:04.88 in fifth. Hannah Brooks (Crawley AC) took sixth in 2:05.05, Alison Leonard (Blackburn Harriers) was seventh in 2:05.79, followed by two more personal bests for Gemma Kersey (Basildon AC) eighth in 2:06.41 and Loren Bleaken (Team Bath) ninth in 2:06.46. Kaylee Dodd (Basildon AC) was tenth in 2:10.33.
