Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix
10 July, 2011
Rowena Cole (Coventry Godiva Harriers) stormed to victory in the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ 800m race at the Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix on Sunday 10 July, setting a personal best of 2:03.61.
Racing fellow OCWK athletes Tara Bird (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) and Alison Leonard (Blackburn Harriers) in addition to two of Britain’s best seniors – Claire Gibson (Kilbarchan AAC) and Karen Harewood (Corby AC) – and a specially invited overseas duo – Eleni Filandra from Greece and Germany’s Annett Horna – Rowena joined Alison near the front of the pack in the first quarter of the race before Tara moved into the runner-up spot at the 200m mark.
At the bell, which was passed by pacemaker Celia Taylor in 59.63 seconds, Filandra was in second place followed by Horna and then Tara. At this point Alison was forced to withdraw from the race with a foot injury.
At the 600m mark, when the pacemaker dropped out, the race was still led by Filandra with Tara strongly positioned in third just ahead of Rowena, who then subsequently moved up another gear in the final 100m to clinch an impressive victory in 2:03.61 ahead of Tara’s season’s best of 2:03.83. The duo beat Filandra, who ran 2:03.93 for third, Karen Harewood fourth in 2:04.53, Horna fifth in 2:04.79 and Gibson sixth in 2:05.87.
